Penhill Quarry is a small family run business. Albert Pengilley started the business although he has now retired and passed the running of the business to his two sons Roy and Jimmy. We started trading in 1968 and we are still going strong.

The stone at Pigsdon Quarry is approximately 300 million years old from the Upper Carboniferous (Westphalian) Fine Sand Stones, interbedded with shales, removed during processing operations.

These were deposited in an equatorial lake, gradually uplifted during the Variscan Orogeny (mountain building episode), initially marine but becoming increasingly fresh during its ~5Ma life.

Lots of abundant plant fossils and occasional fish fossils can be found here inbedded in the stones.

We pride ourselves in operating a professional oufit that still offers a personal service.

The quality of our crushed stone was increased when we installed a new screening plant and dust extraction system a few years ago. We have recently moved our Primary Crusher closer to our Secondary Crusher to increase productivity and the effectiveness of the way we run the business.

We also put alot of time in to both Health & Safety and ISO9001:2000 accreditation, they are both of the utmost importance to us and also help to keep us up to date with technology. We also run a similar system with Tarmac to ensure that our stone is of the best standards and also produce our 803 grade material to the MoT specifation which is regularly tested by an independant laboratory.
